Egyptian oranges stuck in Russian ports after sudden import Regulations

Over 40,000 tons of Egyptian oranges in 150 shipments are currently being held at Russian ports, pending negotiations between the two countries to allow the containers to enter. Although Russian officials claim the shipments do not meet its import specifications, Egyptian exporters laid the blame on Russia for changing its standards without coordinating with the Egyptian side.

However, Egyptian Valencia orange suppliers are facing challenges as their containers have been stopped in Russian seaports due to new regulations of Russian MRL. Suppliers that deal with other products are also affected by the new rules and are considering changing destinations from Russia to other countries.

Last year, Egypt topped the list of orange exporting countries, sending out about 1.67 million tons to markets mostly in Russia, Saudi Arabia, and China. Egypt’s place as the orange export king brought it about US$843 million, according to a September report issued by the

Yesterday, the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics issued a monthly Foreign Trade bulletin for December 2021. Egypt’s trade deficit especially Egyptian Fresh Products stood at $2.41 billion in December 2021, versus December 2020’s $3.08 billion. This constitutes a drop of 21.6%.

The value of exports increased by 45.3%, reaching $4.32 billion, compared to $2.97 billion, due to an increase in the value of some commodities, such as ready-made clothes by 33.0%, plastics in their primary forms by 28.4%, flat products of iron or steel by 22.1%, and the various pasta and food items by 18.6%. 

However, the value of certain exported commodities decreased, with fresh fruits falling in price 0.9% and fresh oranges by 55%.

Additionally, the value of imports increased by 11.3% in December 2021, reaching $6.73 billion, compared to December 2020’s $6.05 billion, due to petroleum products increasing by 71.2%, raw materials of iron or steel by 93.9%, passenger cars by 50.8%, and plastics in their primary forms by 70.0%.

Egypt’s agricultural exports hit new high despite Covid-19

Egypt’s agricultural exports have set a new record, exceeding 5.6 million tons between January 1 and December 31, despite the global pandemic. Citrus fruits made up the largest share of exports by 805,893 tons, followed by potatoes at 614,242 tons, onions at 276,141 tons, and grapes at 143,450 tons, said a report the agriculture minister received from the Head of the Central Department of Agricultural Quarantine at the Ministry of Agriculture Ahmed El Attar.

Prominent among other exports were strawberry, pomegranate, sweet potato, beans, pepper, guava, garlic, mango, and watermelon, the report noted.

Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Sayed el Quseir attributed the record rise to cultivating high-quality products matching international quality standards as well as the efforts exerted by the department to meet the requirements of importing countries and streamline export procedures.
